40% of West Australians are putting off skin cancer screenings
Partnership between HIF Health Insurance and AI tool, SkinVision, to simplify screening processes by digitally monitoring skin health
Skin cancer can be highly treatable if detected early, but research from HIF Health Insurance (HIF) has uncovered that West Australians are delaying their regular skin checks.
HIF data shows that only 80 members, from an eligible membership base of almost 88,000, processed a skin check claim through their Extras cover in the last financial year1. While there are various avenues for Australians to access their skins checks via Medicare or subsidised through work, the Private Health Insurer wants to see consistent checks amongst its membership to increase significantly.
Nikesh Hirani Chief Data & Proposition Officer at HIF said, “Skin Checks are a vital preventative health measure that all West Australians should regularly undertake, particularly in our UV-rich climate". It’s alarming that 40% of West Australians admit to not getting around to their skin checks, with many citing cost or accessibility as obstacles to getting preventative health measures done.2
“We have entered into a partnership with SkinVision, a digital offering that merges AI technology with the expertise of skin health professionals and dermatologists, to support our members monitor their skin health regularly and seamlessly"3.
The SkinVision app allows users to self-examine their skin and provides timely skin spot risk indications that are verified by dermatologists. Depending on the rating (low risk, low risk with symptoms to track, or high risk) users are guided to a health plan to see medical professionals if needed with the ability to share the photo history.
"Our member data shows approximately 2,150 members had skin cancer-related hospital claims over the last five years, likely involving invasive procedures that could have been avoided. Over that same period, these claims have amounted to over $9 million in benefits paid out, which we’d much rather see us invest in preventative health measures, keeping our members healthier and easing pressure on the broader healthcare system,” Hirani.4
"SkinVision has supported more than 3 million users in checking their skin spots and understanding when to seek medical advice.
5 With this partnership, eligible HIF members can now check their skin anytime, anywhere, giving them reassurance when a spot appears low risk and encouraging timely follow-up when a doctor’s review may be needed. Together with HIF, we’re helping people take control of their skin health in a simple, accessible way,” said Erik de Heus, CEO of SkinVision.
