HIF welcomes Senate decision on proposed 65+ rebate changes

HIF News

Since the proposal was announced, HIF has actively advocated on behalf of its members, engaging with government, industry stakeholders and the media to highlight the potential impacts on affordability and access to private health cover. HIF Chief Marketing and Product Officer Kristina Green and General Manager of Member Experience Amanda Bell also appeared before the Senate inquiry earlier this year to ensure the concerns of HIF members were represented during the committee process.

Approximately one in five HIF members are aged 65 and over, many of whom have maintained private health insurance for decades. HIF has consistently argued that reducing rebate support for older Australians could place additional financial pressure on retirees and pensioners already facing rising healthcare and living costs.

While the Senate's decision is a positive outcome for many older Australians, the issue is not yet settled. The legislation has been reintroduced to the House of Representatives and may be subject to further parliamentary consideration and amendment.

"HIF believes any changes that increase the cost of maintaining private health insurance place additional pressure on household budgets and, ultimately, the public health system," said HIF CEO Greg Morris.

"HIF will continue advocating for our members throughout the parliamentary process and will keep members informed as the proposal progresses."
