Supporting your fertility journey

At HIF, we’re committed to supporting our members through every stage of life - including the journey to parenthood, which sometimes may need some additional support. That’s why we’ve partnered with City Fertility, one of Australia’s leading IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) and fertility service providers, to offer exclusive benefits to eligible members.

Since 2003, City Fertility has helped thousands of people navigate their fertility journey, successfully delivering over 21,000 babies across Australia. Fertility challenges are more common than you might think, affecting both men and women equally - with 1 in 6 Australian couples experiencing trouble conceiving. Fertility issues may stem from the male (30%), female (30%), combined (30%), or unknown (10%).

The good news is:
- 85% of couples will conceive naturally within a year, after one year of trying
- 1 in 10 babies are born to women aged 35+ via IVF (ANZARD, 2021)
- 1 in 18 babies born are conceived via IVF (ANZARD, 2021)
- 200,000+ babies have been born in Australia through IVF

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral to make an appointment with a City Fertility specialist?

Yes, you are required to have a referral to your specialist of choice.
You can download a City Fertility referral form and take it along to your GP appointment. If your regular doctor (GP) is unable to provide a referral, or if you need help in obtaining one, please contact City Fertility.

What is IVF?

In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is one of the most common types of Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART).

The main surgical procedure in an IVF cycle is the egg collection (also referred to as egg pick-up, oocyte pick-up and OPU), and sometimes egg harvesting.  After a patient's eggs have been collected, hormone medicines will be prescribed to help prepare the lining of the womb. Meanwhile, the fertilised eggs will grow in a lab for up to six days before the best one or two embryos are transferred into the patient's womb.

From there, it can generally take between 4-6 weeks to complete one cycle of IVF, followed by a couple of weeks wait while the eggs mature. The eggs can then be retrieved and fertilised.

How is my data collected?

HIF does not share your data directly with City Fertility. City Fertility will collect relevant information when you contact them for an appointment. Please visit City Fertility’s Privacy Policy.

How do I know I know if I may be infertile?

Infertility is defined as 12 months of unsuccessful conception for women under 35. For women over 35, this decreases to six months. The majority of women will fall pregnant within six months of trying. If a longer period has passed, there may be something else to consider, and we suggest an initial consultation and work-up.

Which HIF Hospital policies includes ART/IVF?

Our Gold Top Hospital Cover option includes ART. You can claim benefits towards your anaesthetist and doctors’ fees when admitted to hospital as an inpatient. You'll also be covered for theatre fees and accommodation in an HIF-contracted private hospital.1

•     12 months (pre-existing condition)
