What are Hospital appliances?
Hospital Appliances are disposable items that are used during surgery such as sponges and clips. For example, in the case of a maternity admission, a hospital appliance would be if antibiotic tubing was required as the result of a Caesarean.
What is covered under Hospital appliances?
If you are going into hospital to have surgery to implant or apply prosthesis, we will pay a benefit towards this if you have the appropriate level of cover for the treatment and the product is listed on the Prostheses list.
There are over 10,000 surgically implanted prostheses and other medical devices, these include:
- hip, knee and other joint replacement devices
- cardiac implantable electronic devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators
- cardiac stents
- vascular stents and grafts
- heart valves
What is not covered on the Prostheses list?
Devices such as external limb prostheses, external breast prostheses and implants used solely for cosmetic purposes are not covered by private health insurance.
