Can I claim for the Australian Government Rebate on Private Health Insurance as a visitor from a reciprocal country?

If you have Extras cover, then the answer is, yes!

Provided you are an Overseas Visitor, from a country with a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with Australia and hold a complying health insurance product, you’re certainly entitled to receive the Australian Government Rebate on private health insurance for your Extras cover. 

Important, please note: Overseas Working Visa Hospital Cover and Overseas Non-Working Hospital Cover products are not eligible for the Australian Government Rebate.

The rebate applies to domestic Hospital and Extras policies provided by Australian registered health insurers. It does not apply to Overseas Visitors Health Cover or other types of insurance. In short, anyone who is eligible for Medicare and has a complying health insurance product is eligible for the rebate, subject to their income threshold. 

From 1 July 2025, the income thresholds are:
