Is there a waiting period for Hospital Cover?

Whether we’re answering your call, or helping you switch from another health fund, we aim to make arranging your Overseas Workers Health Cover as simple as possible. But unfortunately waiting periods (the time you have to wait before you can claim for treatment) are a standard part of a working visa cover.

Waiting periods help protect members by preventing people from joining, claiming large amounts and then cancelling their policy. But we always try to keep waiting periods to an absolute minimum. If you’re switching from another Australian health fund, we’ll take your previous membership into account, so you won’t need to re-serve waiting periods on an equivalent or lower level of cover.

Important, please note:

Continuity in cover will not be offered if the financial date paid to your previous health insurer is greater than 2 months from the commencement date with HIF.
If transferring to HIF from an International health fund, then continuity in cover will be offered at a pre-determined level, based on the product type held at HIF.

For HIF Hospital cover, the waiting periods are as follows:

Emergency Ambulance – 1 day
Non-Emergency Ambulance – 30 days
2 months: Psychiatric care, rehabilitation & palliative care (regardless of whether it's pre-existing or not)
12 months: All pregnancy and birth related services
12 months: Pre-existing conditions or ailments

What's a pre-existing condition?

A pre-existing condition is defined as: ‘Any ailment, illness, or condition where, in the opinion of a medical adviser appointed by the health insurer, the signs or symptoms of that illness, ailment or condition existed at any time in the period of six months ending on the day on which the person became insured under the policy.’

The Pre-Existing Condition waiting period applies to new members and existing members who upgrade their policy to access higher-level benefits. The test applied under the law relies on the presence of signs or symptoms of the illness, ailment or condition, not on a diagnosis (i.e. it’s not necessary for the member or their doctor to know what their condition is or for it to be diagnosed).

When determining whether an illness is pre-existing, an HIF-appointed medical practitioner will consider information provided by your treating doctor.

Waiting periods are effective from your arrival into Australia.
To be eligible to purchase HIF Working Visa Cover, you must hold a current Australian Working Visa.
Overseas Workers Health Cover is only available to international visitors to Australia aged less than 65 years of age.
Overseas Workers Health Cover does not exempt you from the Medicare Levy Surcharge.
